What does the WGA entail?
The WGA (Return to Work Partially Disabled) supports people who can work partially or may be able to work more in the future. The starting point is to remain as active as possible in the labor process.
The Three Stages of the WGA
| Stage | Period | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Wage-Related Benefit (LGU) | Start phase | 70% of your WIA monthly income |
| Wage Supplement (LA) | After LGU, when working | 70% of difference between old and new salary |
| Follow-up Benefit (VU) | After LGU, without work | Percentage AO x minimum wage |
How Long Does the Wage-Related Benefit Last?
The duration of the LGU is determined by your work history:
- Minimum 3 months
- For each year worked: +1 month
- Maximum 24 months
Working is Rewarded
Wage Supplement versus Follow-up Benefit
After the first phase, it makes a big difference whether you work:
- When working: Wage Supplement up to 70% of your former income
- Without work: Follow-up Benefit based on minimum wage
Remaining active in the labor market is therefore strongly encouraged!
Example Calculation
Suppose your monthly salary was €3,000 and you are 50% disabled for work:
- Remaining earning capacity: €1,500
- Current income: €1,000
- Wage Supplement: 70% x (€3,000 - €1,000) = €1,400
- Total monthly income: €1,000 + €1,400 = €2,400
Obligations with a WGA Benefit
- Actively seek suitable work
- Participate in reintegration activities
- Report changes in income
- Cooperate with periodic reassessments
What if I fully recover?
In that case, your WGA benefit ends. You may qualify for a WW benefit.
Can my WGA transition to an IVA benefit?
Yes, if your health deteriorates and you become fully and permanently disabled for work.
What if my employer is a self-insurer?
Then your (former) employer is responsible for paying the WGA benefit and your reintegration process.
