  • The Social Insurance Bank (SVB) informs you approximately 6 months before your AOW age.
  • You check and complete your details.
  • If you emigrate abroad, you must submit an application yourself.

What is an AOW gap?

If you have lived abroad for periods, you may have an AOW gap:

  • For each uninsured year: 2% less AOW benefit.
  • Voluntary insurance is an option in some cases.
  • Purchasing missed years is possible up to 10 years back.

Combining AOW with work

It is permitted to continue working after your AOW age:

  • Your AOW benefit is not reduced.
  • You pay less taxes, as you no longer contribute AOW premiums.
  • Other employment law rules may apply.

Is early AOW receipt possible?

No, the AOW starts exclusively at the established AOW age. Early payment with a lower amount is not possible.

Do I receive AOW if I live outside the Netherlands?

Yes, your accrued AOW is also paid out abroad. The exact amount depends on your country of residence.

Does my partner's income affect my AOW?

No, since 2015 the AOW has been fully individualised. However, you may receive a supplement if your partner is younger and has no income of their own.

Frequently asked questions about AOW in Westland

When do I receive my AOW?

Your AOW age is determined by your year of birth. The SVB sends you a message approximately 6 months before this date. You can also calculate your exact age online via the SVB website or the government portal. Ensure your details are up to date, especially if moving abroad.

What if I have lived outside the Netherlands for periods?

For each year you did not live or work in the Netherlands between your 15th and AOW age, you receive 2% less AOW. This is called an AOW gap. You can sometimes compensate for this through voluntary insurance or purchasing years (maximum 10 years back). Contact the SVB for your situation.

Can I defer my AOW to continue working?

No, the AOW starts automatically at your AOW age and deferral for a higher benefit is not possible. You can continue working without your AOW being reduced. Moreover, you no longer pay AOW premiums, which provides a tax advantage.

What is my AOW amount when cohabiting?

When cohabiting, you receive approximately €1.050 gross per month per person (2024). This is lower than for singles (€1.550), as the government assumes shared costs. If your partner is younger and has no income, you may be eligible for an additional supplement.

Do I need to apply for AOW myself?

Usually not. The SVB handles this automatically for residents of the Netherlands. You will receive a message in good time to check your details.
